If you are looking for a horse, make sure to check out our rehoming page. We’ve had several more horses added. One is a 25 year old Arabian gelding that is still sound and great with kids. The other is a 26 year old TB gelding that is also great with kids.

We got a rubber mat at Home Depot for Maverick to stand on in his stall. It was a bit of a challenge to find a rubber one that was not only big enough, but also has a texture to it so he wouldn’t slip on it. Without his right leg slipping all over now he is standing up much longer in his stall. We are hoping we can get a couple more mats for him to put at his water tub and such. Each mat is $25. It is making such a big difference in him being able to stand up and we are really happy. He is coming in to stand up and eat not just his pellets and supplements but also to just stand and eat hay. Yeah Maverick!

We’d like to send out a HUGE thank you to Kathy B. for her generous donation!

The balance on the splints is now $364, which we need to pay off. Any donations towards this are greatly appreciated, even $5 or $10.

We are continuing to see very sublte changes in Maverick, but nothing major yet. We are continuing to hope and pray that the causticum will help.

We did get the Arizona Regional Mix and have started him on that. Hopefully if he does have any copper deficiencies this will help that.

We’ve started Maverick on a homeopathic remedy that was recommended to us called Causticum. This homeopathic is supposed to be excellent for contracted tendons. We started him on it yesterday morning. So far we have not noticed any major differences in him. There is something different but we can’t quite put our finger on it.

We have also ordered something called the Arizona Regional Mix made by Horse Tech. Apparently Arizona hays are typically very high in iron and low in copper. High iron further suppresses copper and according to research we have been doing lately copper deficiency can contribute to contracted tendons. This mix is formulated to make up for the lack of copper in the hay. Hopefully we shall be getting this next week and can get him started on it.

We really need everyone’s help. The rental on Maverick’s splints has expired. While we haven’t been using them for therapy, we have still been using them to help support him when he has his feet trimmed. The splints must be returned and the remaining balance of $564.00 paid before February 2009 with a minimum payment of $100.00 due by October 16.

With the increasing price of feed ($16 a bale of hay and $12.99 a bag of pellets up from $12 and $9.99 respectively) and a drastic decrease in donations, we have not been able to pay off the remaining balance on the rental of Maverick’s splints. We and Maverick thank you for giving him this opportunity to heal.

Alf gave us quite the scare last night! As we walked out to the barn to feed we happen to hear this munching noise, and vaguely see a shape off to our right. Now because of his dark coloring he was rather hard to see except for just this vague outline and it was dark. We finally realized that Alf had managed to escape out of his pen and was happily gumming some grass to death! Adventures/surprises like that I can so do without!

Edited to add:

We are so excited that the Swingin’ Saddlebabes and in return Equine Recline are getting some nice publicity due to the marketing of the Hunks & Horses calendar! Just check this out: http://hoofcare.blogspot.com/2008/10/farrier-fundraising-fun-hunks-and.html

Saturday was the launch of the Hunks and Horses Calendar put out by the Swingin’ SaddleBabes. Make sure to get your calendar today at http://www.swinginsaddlebabes.com or you can also check on their website to see where they’ll be each weekend to buy one in person. Some of the farriers will be at the events to autograph copies. This coming up weekend they’ll be at the Desert Thunder Pro Rodeo. And don’t forget a portion of the proceeds will be going to Equine Recline. These would make great holiday gifts!

Maverick got his shoes reset today. We are extremely pleased with how well these plastic horseshoes have held up. While we’d read the Ground Control website that people have been able to reset them 2 or even 3 times, we were rather sceptical. But sure enough we were able to reset them. His hoof growth is continuing without an issues.
