Maverick
Maverick is a 10 year old QH/Andalusian cross (we think), chestnut gelding. He came to Equine Recline in 2006 with bowed (torn) tendons in both front legs. He refused to bear full weight on the left leg which had the most recent bow. As a result the tendons began to contract. Despite numerous therapies and ideas to help him stand correctly, we could not get the leg corrected. Then in 2007 his right leg began to contract too.
In June of 2007 we got a splint or a brace for him called a Dynasplint. It is a jointed splint to help gently stretch the leg. We saw minor improvements, but then he broke the splint. Until November he broke 5 of the splints, and then upgraded to a heavier splint. In December we decided to rent a second splint so that both legs could be supported at the same time. We are again seeing some minor improvements in his legs, especially in the left. Then he developed abscesses at the coronet bands (where skin meets hoof) on both hooves which kept getting rubbed raw by the splints. Then he broke the first upgraded splint.
Right now he is not wearing any splints to give the abscesses time to heal. We are using Sports Medicine Boots on him to give him support.
